Background:

Pesticides are chemicals with long-lasting effects on the health of wild animals and their ability to bear offspring. Snow falling on Greenland is expected to contain traces of pesticide pollution, but at the moment, we don’t know the amount of those chemicals that falls with snow, or where most of it comes from (especially if it is comes directly from places of use, or from where they got accumulated in the natural environment). Pesticides are a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which (as their name suggests) are resistant to being broken down in the natural environment, and so they accumulate over time and through food chains impacting not only animals but the communities along the coasts of Greenland.

 

What we will do:

To find out about current POP contamination on Greenland we will collect clean samples of surface snow from a traverse across the southern part of the Greenland icesheet.  This requires following a rigorous sampling procedure to ensure the samples represent only the original pollution from this snowfall, and nothing carried by the traverse team. These samples will be brought back to the laboratory to be analysed for their chemical content. The concentrations of chemicals in the snow will be related to the source area by linking the snow sample to a known snow event. Then, the atmospheric circulation patterns at the time will help determine a pathway along which pollutants would have been brought into the snow-producing clouds. This pilot study will inform future research on Pollution in Greenland.

Human dimension:

Greenland is too frequently being used as a science lab, without taking into account the local communites. Therefore, we are aiming to communicate with the people of Greenland, both about the environment and pollution in general, and the specific outcomes of this project. Furthermore through citizen science we wish to engage the communities in these studies with their knowledge, perceptions and what they define as important research questions.
